A handcrafted approach for a UK small-batch rum
Hoverfly Design was approached to produce a new concept brand identity for, small batch, artisan rum, by the UK, Plymouth-based Mutley Distillery. We helped with brand naming and created a new identity for this artisan rum producer. ‘Vault 53’ is taken from the product’s housing. Distilled in an old bank at No.53 the rum is stored to mature in the building’s old vault. The typography for this logo was redrawn to create the arc in the logo. The 3 bolts at the top of the logo are indicative of the product safekeeping and the maturation process of the flagship product. We need to create a simple logo that would appeal to millennials whilst showing craftsmanship. The V53 icon was also created to add diversity to the brand and is used on the distillery signage and social media as a shorthand version of the brand.
A comprehensive design process
Designing a new product brand is a highly involved process, which lots of intricate stages and trials to get to a final solution. Vault 53 was certainly no exception. We created 4 different logo concept routes with lots of variations on each design, playing with colours and showing the designs utilised in relevant scenarios to allow an informed choice to be made. We also market-tested the designs with appropriate audiences to gain valuable feedback. It was important that the brand was bold and emotive so that it could be displayed in a wide variety of formats to gain an appropriate fan base. We trialled the design for use in marketing and on merchandising to ensure we were on target. Once the core logo was developed we then moved on to producing product labels which can be seen here.
